Bauer has been appointed to construct the foundations for Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Tower, which at 1,001m will be the first building in the world to be taller than 1km.
The Kingdom Tower, which is being constructed by Saudi Binladin Group, will take the title of the world’s tallest building from the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The Kingdom Tower, designed by architect AS+GG, will be 173m taller than the Burj Khalifa when it is completed in 2018.
The foundations work for the new project in Jeddah will see Bauer construct 270 bored piles with diameters of 1.5m and 1.8m to depths of up to 110m. The original design of the building was for a 1.6km tall tower but ground investigations in 2008 revealed that the ground conditions were too challenging and the height of building was scaled back.
