Dance your way to fitness…Thousands groove to Thriller

Michael Jackson’s hit song ‘Thriller’ can get anyone on their toes and move the shoulders. Set against the iconic backdrop of Burj Khalifa, a few thousand dancers grooved to the song at the first-ever dance extravaganza at Downtown Dubai on Friday. From zombie walks to well coordinated dance moves, the event saw high-energy action from every single participant.

Earth Hour leaves UAE in the dark

When the clock struck 8.30pm last night, the lights went out across the country. In the capital, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the Sheikh Zayed Bridge, Yas Hotel and several streets were plunged into darkness. In Dubai, the Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab and Downtown Dubai quieted their usually blazing bulbs and lasers.

Burj Khalifa, the world’s only ‘Global Icon’ and the civic pride of the city of Dubai, now has a monument saluting the international collaboration that marked the accomplishment of the world’s tallest building. Emaar Properties, the developer of Burj Khalifa, has unveiled ‘The Burj Monument,’ 18 metres high and in stainless steel, in Downtown Dubai, near The Dubai Mall.

Investors should pay special attention to China, the Skyscraper Index warns, as the “biggest bubble builder” is currently erecting 53 percent of the 124 skyscrapers planned over the next six years. China currently has 75 completed buildings above 240 metres in height.

DSF Carnival reflects vibrant, colourful face of annual festival

The DSF Carnival is set to draw huge crowds, especially since it has the potential to woo thousands of shoppers from nearby Dubai Mall, the world’s most-visited shopping and leisure destination. The mall, which overlooks Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, attracted a record of over 54 million visitors in 2011, according to recently published figures.

Downtown Dubai turns festive

Thousands of energy-efficient decorative lights have started shining along the three-km long Emaar Boulevard, Downtown Dubai, which will continue through the entire festival season, including the UAE National Day celebrations, Emirates Classic Car Festival, New Year’s Eve and the Dubai Shopping Festival, up until April 2012.

Dubai tourism has never been more diverse

The scene this week at the Burj Khalifa reflected the surge in the number of tourists coming into Dubai this year, with visitors coming from a far more diverse range of locations compared with a couple of years ago, when the emirate was largely attracting wealthy travellers from Europe.
