Infinity Towers give new twist to capital’s skyline
The Infinity Tower in Dubai Marina stands out among the more creative buildings across the Emirates with a new twist to architecture. When completed, the high-rise will be the world’s tallest twisted tower, at 73 storeys and 307 metres. It may come as no surprise to learn that Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (Som), the architectural firm behind the Burj Khalifa, designed the striking tower.
Dubai’s Burj Khalifa builder Emaar profit drops 69 percent on fewer home handovers, writedown
Emaar Properties said Tuesday it earned 250 million dirhams ($68.1 million) from April through June, compared with the 802 million dirhams booked in the same period a year earlier. This year’s figure includes a 172 million dirham charge to cover Emaar’s 30 percent stake in Dubai Bank.
Innovation can help create magic spark
Big innovation happens a lot in the Middle East, in fact probably more than anywhere else in the world. Who else would have built Burj Khalifa? I think the reason it’s happened a lot is because there is a lot of support from the Government and there’s not necessarily the question of a business case behind it. The challenge is on small innovation, the day-to-day stuff.
Depa warns of sliding revenues across the board
Depa, the Dubai interior contractor that fitted out the Burj Khalifa, is the latest company in the construction sector to warn that turmoil in the Middle East is driving down revenue. The delay of several large contracts in the region will “dampen full-year market expectations”, it said yesterday.
Sizzle & fizzle
Suspended from the ceiling of an atrium, the shimmering cascade is intended to be a poetic evocation of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, in Dubai. Since 18 minutes remained before the show’s official 6 p.m. opening, there was still time — theoretically, at least — to remove the lifts and install a pile of mirrored rocks designed to suggest the elaborate reflecting pools that surround the Burj in its desert homeland.
A transport of delight in Dubai
And the Burj Khalifa, at 828m high the tallest structure in the world, looks like nothing more than a giant silver rocket ship poised to head into space. As a matter of a fact, when you go up 124 storeys to the observation deck at 10 metres a second in the tallest and fastest lift in the world, it does feel as though you’re going in a rocket ship.
The New World in Dubai
The architecture is ersatz, too. Sometimes there are local elements — the odd Arabian Nights turret, a fake souk — but the tallest building in the world, theBurj Khalifa , distinctly resembles Chicago’s Willis Tower (which also used to be the tallest building in the world). This is no accident: Both buildings were designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, also from Chicago.
INDEX is named best tall building
The award will be presented at the CTBUH’s 10th annual awards dinner which will held on October 27 at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, US. INDEX now finds itself in the running for the 2011 Best Tall Building Worldwide Award, as the regional win places it among the four nominees for the overall prize. The 2010 prize for Best Tall Building Worldwide was awarded to the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.
World’s Greatest Infrastructure Projects
Cities around the world take turns owning the title for the tallest skyscraper, the longest bridge or the deepest mine. Covering nearly every continent of the world, here’s our current list, which I’m sure will change over the next few years.
Malaysia Promotes Tourism To Arabs In Dubai
A visit to Dubai is incomplete without a visit to the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. The magnificent 160-storey tower, which officially opened to the public on Jan 4, last year, is 828 metres tall. Its construction cost is estimated to be about USD1.5 billion.
