Projects from the UAE bagged five awards. Burj Khalifa was the undisputed winner in the Building Project of the Year category. The ceremony, held March 22 at the Ritz-Carlton in Dubai, was attended by officials and representatives from leading private sector enterprises in the region.

Burj Khalifa was the undisputed winner in the ‘Building Project of the Year’ category sponsored by Technal Middle East, while the ‘Transport Project of the Year’ sponsored by Cadillac was picked up Dubai Metro Red Line.

The Missoni hotel, reflecting the designs of the Italian fashion house, has bold colours and striped and floral patterns throughout. Missoni, along with Versace, Armani and Bulgari, is part of a trend that has emerged in recent years for fashion names to move into hospitality.

When the Ritz-Carlton closed the doors to its original Hong Kong hotel in 2008, it wasn't long before the hotel group would make one of its biggest announcements in hotel history: the next Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong would be open just three years later and would be the highest hotel in the world, surpassing the Armani Hotel at the Burj Khalifa, which opened in March 2010.

The event, which took place at the Armani hotel in the Burj Khalifa two weeks ago, was so successful that Unicef doubled the initial estimates of what could be done with the money. The organisers now plan to run an annual fund-raiser that focuses on a different element of the reconstruction and rebuilding effort in Pakistan.

Downtown Dubai’s centrepiece is Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest (and, I think, one of its most elegant and beautiful) buildings. The tour up one of its 57 elevators to the public viewing level on the 124th floor, which includes the story of its building, may be the best $30-odd travellers spend in Dubai.

The gallery will hold the opening ceremony at Residences 2, Shop S-08 in Downtown Dubai, on Burj Khalifa Lake. A ‘concept’ gallery founded by Moza Mohammed Al Abbar, the gallery aims to expose young and aspiring artists from around the Arab world.

Described as “the new heart of the city” and “the centre of now”, Downtown Dubai is an inspired urban concept that has come to include the world’s tallest building (Burj Khalifa), largest shopping mall (Dubai Mall) and largest fountain, in a city that has become renowned for its cutting-edge architecture and sky-scraping ambition.
