The US$20 billion Downtown Dubai is the world's newest and most all-encompassing urban development. Described as the 'new heart of Dubai,' this 500-acre development is anchored by Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, and also features The Dubai Mall, the world's largest shopping and entertainment destination.

The emirate is famed for a number of things such as the Burj Khalifa, which is the world’s tallest building, and the ‘The World’ which is a manmade archipelago with each mini island a potential home for the super-rich. Many people travel to Dubai for holidays, but there is probably just as much, if not more, coming to do business.

Plans are moving forward on Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the latest contender for the mantle of “world’s tallest building.” Part of the 23-million-square-meter project known as Kingdom City, the tower is slotted for 1001 meters, 173 meters taller than Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the current record holder, which opened earlier this year.

The world's first hotel under the Armani branding has been opened in Dubai and offers 160 luxury rooms and suites. It is located on the first eight floors as well as the 38th and 39th of the Burj Khalifa – currently the world's tallest building.

In Dubai on 11 January, a tour to the At The Top observation deck of Burj Khalifa turned into a nightmare for 15 visitors when they became stuck between floors in a high-speed lift, and had to be rescued via a service lift. Apparently the problem was only a ‘stall’, and hence not a major problem, but neither Burj Khalifa nor lift supplier Otis has issued any statement to date about the incident.
