Jeddah Tower engineer sets sights on Moon after completing world’s largest building

The engineer behind the record-breaking Jeddah Tower project has his eyes set on lunar infrastructure once the world’s tallest building is completed.

Recent remarks from  John Peronto point beyond terrestrial skylines, even as Saudi Arabia’s flagship tower closes on the 104th floor and keeps its 2028 target in view.

He suggested that, by the end of the century, conversations about the world’s tallest buildings will change completely and will not be restricted to Planet Earth.

“I think you’ll be asking different questions in 50 years,” he said, before suggesting we could soon be asking “what’s the biggest building we’re planning to put on the Moon?”

AS+GG places the project above 1,000 metres, the height of Jeddah Tower, once completed, will be enough to take the height crown from Burj Khalifa.

Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) values the project at $1.2bn (AED4.41bn) and lists a luxury hotel, offices, serviced apartments, condominiums and the world’s highest observatory within the mix.

Gill has also argued in recent weeks that architecture’s next gains will not come only from pushing higher. He has pointed instead to reworking existing urban stock and asking what building design looks like when infrastructure extends beyond Earth. More
